There are a lot of VPN service providers, but few of them support the free mobile VPN (mVPN) client on Nokia Symbian platform. As far as I know, there are only 2.

The first VPN service provider, which supports Nokia mobile VPN client is 12VPN, which seems to be a company from Hong Kong. I have been using 12VPN for about one and half years and quite happy about their service. However, from the beginning of 2011, 12VPN removed their lite plan and increased the price of personal plan. Here is the features of current 12VPN personal plan.

12VPN Personal plans provide an unlimited and worry free VPN experience. Use it whenever you like, as much as you like. Ideal if you spend a lot of time online, enjoy video streaming, downloading or other bandwidth intensive applications.

The second one is IGVPN, which seems to be a one-man service provider and just started its business a few months ago. Here is the features of is IGVPN Pro Bundle (less than 28$/6 months):

  1. OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP, IPSec IKEv2 VPN service for all kind of desktop or mobile platform;
  2. Cisco IPSec VPN based on RSA certificate;
  3. Cisco IPSec VPN for Apple iOS based on RSA;
  4. L2TP/IPSec VPN for Apple iOS;
  5. PPTP VPN for Apple iOS;
  6. Nokia S60 mVPN based on RSA;
  7. Access to all VPN servers;
  8. The data traffic for each VPN account is 20GB/month;
  9. 5 simultaneously connections are allowed for each VPN account (including SSH tunneling);
  10. Provide SSH tunneling on all servers.

I just purchased an IGVPN account a few days ago and didn’t test it intensively yet. But according the feedback from another user, the IPSec VPN service for Nokia Symbian smartphones from IGVPN is not very stable.

Comparing with 12VPN, the technical support of IGVPN may be not as professional as 12VPN. 12VPN also has more choice of VPN server locations than IGVPN, which only has 10 US based servers at this moment. Moreover, 12VPN allows more data traffic than IGVPN too and doesn’t explicitly mention the limitation of simultaneous connections. 7-day money back guarantee is another advantage of 12VPN. However, IGVPN offers lower price and more plans to be chosen according to users’ requirement.

Is this review helpful to users who need to choose a VPN service provider that support Nokia mobile VPN client.

As a business smartphone, Nokia E7 has pre-installed mobile VPN client for free by default. But how to configure the mVPN client, which supports IPSec protocol is quite different comparing with the setup of PPTP/L2TP VPN on iPhone and Android.

Because of that, many users get frustrated. When searching online with keywords “Nokia E7 VPN”, you can find solutions as below:

Option A.
1. Sell Nokia E7 phone.
2. Buy Nokia 5800 phone and SymVPN software.
3. Configure SymVPN software in 3 min and start using VPN on your Nokia phone.

Option B.
1. Install free Mobile VPN software from Nokia.
2. Spend a few months trying to get it work.
3. Go to option A.

Options C.
1. Wait until someone will create normal VPN software for Symbian^3. It may takes only a few years.
2. You still can go to option A if needed.

Though the real answer is not so desperate. In general, the configuration of VPN on Nokia E7 is more or less the same as the tutorial in previous post. The major difference is that E7 has mVPN pre-installed in its ROM, users may get error when they are trying install or update the mobile VPN client themselves.

The conclusion is that, users have to choose VPN service provider like 12VPN, which supports IPSec protocol,  to use the free mobile VPN client on E7, since the SymVPN software, which supports common PPTP protocol, is not compatible with Symbian^3 system.

How to setup VPN on Nokia N8 is one of the most confusing tasks for this Symbian smartphone users. A simple guide of Nokia N8 VPN setup is given below.

First, there are various VPN protocols that need different software. Nokia provides a free VPN client for Symbian smartphones called mobile VPN (mVPN), which only support (Cisco) IPSec protocol. To support PPTP protocol, users need a third party software called SymVPN, which cost about 30$.

Second, there are several versions of mVPN client corresponding to Symbian S60 V3 (FP1 & FP2), V5 or Symbian^3 and later OS. The version for Nokia N8 should be V4.3.

Third, users need their VPN service providers supporting IPSec protocol to use the mVPN client. Personally I recommend 12VPN, which is the only VPN service provider supporting Symbian smartphones. Users can get 10% discount by using coupon code “MOBILE4FREE” to purchase service from 12vpn. Users also can build their own VPN gateways on dedicated servers or VPS and here is a tutorial.  Comparing with VPN setup by individuals, 12VPN has some advantages:

  1. They have multiple VPN server located in different cities in different countries. This is very helpful to users need proxy in specific regions to be entitled for some services, such as BBC iPlayer, Hulu and so on. It also mean redundant backup for better reliabilty;
  2. As a commercial company, they have more resources to provide better customer support than individuals.

At last, an instruction of how to setup the mobile VPN client can be found here. For users who are using IPSec VPN gateway from professional vendors such as Cisco, they may ask assistant from their system administrators or using Nokia Mobile VPN Client Policy Tool to generate configuration file themselves.

Hope this post make it more clear about how to setup VPN on Nokia N8 Symbian smartphone for users need this kind of information.
